His use of expressive brushstrokes and bold colours contributed to the rise of expressionism in modern art.

Van Gogh was a prolific painter and created approximately 2100 artworks in just over a decade, most of them in the last two years of his life. Van Gogh flourished when surrounded by nature and created magnificent and uplifting works of art that showcased the natural world.

In February 1888, Van Gogh moved to the village of Arles in southern France in hopes of establishing an artistic retreat and commune. It was in Arles where his paintings became more brightly coloured and he fully embraced the renewing power of nature, depicting local olive groves, wheat fields, and flowers. Van Gogh was energised by his new environment, completing 200 paintings and more than 100 drawings and watercolours during his time there.

Van Gogh often called his still life pieces “colour studies.” By arranging flowers in different combinations and setting them against saturated fields of colour, he experimented with bold new chromatic relationships. Reproduced on this cover is the canvas Still Life (Nature morte), which he painted in May 1888, a few months after his move to the village. With his bold and timeless use of colour and line, Bowers captures the charm of these iconic characters. Tim Bowers’ art has found a place in countless hearts, young and old.

The Story Behind the Design

A seasoned children’s book artist, Tim Bowers sees himself as a storyteller. And indeed, our Merrymakers designs, based on a series of Tim’s paintings, invite you to find a moment to sit down and discover what happens next in the story. With his lovable characters and their innocent frolics, he creates an atmosphere of kindness and harmony for all – young and old – to enjoy.

Born in Troy, Ohio, Tim studied at the Columbus College of Art & Design to prepare himself for a career as a professional illustrator. After producing promotional imagery for a commercial illustration studio, he joined Hallmark Cards and helped to establish the company’s popular Shoebox line of humorous cards.

Eventually, his penchant for comical portrayals of animal characters gained the attention of publishers of children’s literature. Since the 1986 release of the first book featuring his illustrations, Tim has collaborated on several dozen books, many of which have received awards, including two titles that made the New York Times bestseller list. More recently, he has been working in the genre of miniature painting, creating small stylised portraits of animals with his familiar touch of humour.

According to the artist himself, what is most interesting about capturing children’s stories in lively, colourful images is that he gets to experiment in combining imaginative ideas and realistic details. When he sets out to illustrate a story he begins by sketching a character, a process that he describes as similar to casting the right actor for the intended role. For Tim, every completed project means a positive message or an inspiration shared with a young audience of keen readers and viewers, the knowledge of which keeps him passionate about his work.

Playful and sweet-natured, Tim Bowers’ Merrymakers images illustrate one of the best things about childhood – the times when one can forget about everything while engrossed in a game or other fun activity. The charming characters featured in our Moonlight Stories design, from an illustration originally titled Bear Reading, remind us of the value of spending time immersed in a good book. He was one of the grand adventurers of his time, but he is most famous today for his self-illustrated philosophical story, The Little Prince, which tells of the meeting between a stranded pilot and a prince who lives on an asteroid.

Shown here is a page from Saint-Exupéry’s manuscript for The Little Prince, which has become a classic of children’s literature and is one of the most translated and beloved books in the world. The simple tale relates the story of a child, the little prince, who travels the universe gaining wisdom.

The story follows the prince’s journey as he visits different planets and meets strange characters, while exploring themes of isolation, friendship, and love. The little prince’s encounters with the rose, the fox, and the aviator add to the richly metaphorical quality of the novella as well as its whimsical charm. Saint-Exupéry’s unmistakable illustrations and the tale’s collective ideas on the human condition continue to captivate readers of every age while inspiring a celebration of innocence and imagination.

Saint-Exupéry disappeared on a reconnaissance mission over the Mediterranean while flying for the Free French Forces in July of 1944, and the wreckage of his aircraft was discovered off the coast of Marseille after nearly 60 years. What exactly happened to him remains a mystery, but decades later his work continues to delight, a lofty legacy for any writer. The art of Laurel Burch (1945–2007) has an especially uplifting, joyful, nurturing quality. Designs from our colourful Laurel Burch Collection can take you on a flight of imagination, from the world of Fantastic Felines to a celebration of the Spirit of Womankind.

Born in Southern California, Laurel was diagnosed with a congenital bone disease which resulted in more than a hundred cases of bone fractures over the course of her life. She was raised in the difficult circumstances of a broken family and as a teenager chose to walk away from this life and take her own, independent path. She eventually found her place in San Francisco, and as a single mother sought creative ways to provide for her family.

Though not trained in art or jewellery making, Laurel began to put together interesting metal scraps she found in junk yards. She created quirky jewellery and developed her artistic style into what we see today. Her vibrant colours and joyful paintings became so popular that her works were licensed around the world. Through art she found her solace, her haven, her sense of spiritual restoration.

Laurel’s pictures are filled with imaginative visions, lively colours and living creatures. When she went to China in 1971 to start mass production of the goods she designed, she discovered cloisonné, a traditional technique of embellishing metal surfaces with enamel.
