Seen on our Amy Winehouse cover is a self-portrait and lyrics from her song “Tears Dry on Their Own.”

The Story Behind the Design

Amy Jade Winehouse (1983–2011) was an English singer and songwriter known for her powerful deep contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres including R&B, soul and jazz. The top-selling British artist of the 21st century, Winehouse revitalised soul music with her brassy, sweet-and-sour voice and her timeless sensibility.

Amy Winehouse herself owned many Paperblanks journals. As Alex Winehouse from the Amy Winehouse Foundation explains, “I personally wanted to find a sketch that Amy had drawn – it is something I think Paperblanks do very well in respect to other artists and musicians in the portfolio – that showed that she was a fun, quirky, loving person. This sketch, taken from a little note she had written, sums her up very well I think. To the world, she was a major music star. To her family and friends, she was someone completely different. I think, with the sketch and the lyrics featured on the book cover design, we get both of these sides.”

This special Embellished Manuscript depicts a self-portrait and lyrics from Winehouse’s song “Tears Dry on Their Own” from her 2006 album Back to Black. Royalties from the sale of this journal will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, a global charity that helps prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up by her family in memory of Amy and it also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential. We are pleased to partner with the Amy Winehouse Foundation in the creation of our journal celebrating her artistic legacy.

Original artwork: Amy Winehouse’s autoportrait sketch and handwritten song lyrics

Era: early 2000s

Region: United Kingdom

Product Details

Size: Ultra – 180 × 230 × 20 mm

Interior: Lined

Pages: 144 (72 sheets)

Paper: 120 gsm acid-free cream laid paper

Cover: Hardback

Closure: Wrap closure with hidden magnets

Binding: Smyth sewn – lies flat and stays durable

Corners: Square

Pouch: Memento pouch

Design: Amy Winehouse, Tears Dry

Series: Embellished Manuscripts Collection

Satin ribbon marker

100% recycled binder boards

Decorative printed cover paper

Endpaper with credit and copyright information as well as historical background for the original artwork

Threaded stitching and glue, as needed

Acid-free paper

Memento pouch

Weight: 556 g

Product code: PB2526-9 | ISBN: 9781439725269

About Paperblanks

Paperblanks works with museums, libraries, galleries and artists around the world to faithfully reproduce remarkable artwork, historic bindings and treasured manuscripts.
