Bob Ross gesso and liquid acrylics are used to prepare and tone a canvas before oil painting begins. A coloured ground is a key part of many Bob Ross lessons: a dark gesso sets the mood for a night scene or seascape, while grey sits neatly between the two for misty or wintry subjects.
The acrylic gesso comes in White, Grey and Black in a generous 473ml size. The 118ml Liquid Acrylic in White and Black is useful for blocking in simple shapes, such as a black silhouette or an oval vignette, that dry quickly ready for oil colour on top.
Apply with a foam applicator or large brush and allow to dry thoroughly before painting over with oils. A toned ground also saves paint and helps unify the colours of the finished picture.
