The original 1709 Swiss binding that inspired this cover was crafted from black leather punctuated by leather studs. Inspired by some favourite sweet treats, we softened up that look by offering a butter yellow background to highlight the “pointillé” pattern of shimmering metallic dots.

The Story Behind the Design

The original binding that inspired our Shimmering Delights series comes from classic bookbinding tradition, and it is truly the colour choices that are the highlight of these delicious covers! Originally crafted in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1798 on black, grained leather, this dotted cover design would have been created using the technique known as “pointillé.” One of the prettiest of the decorative arts, pointillé involves hammering brass studs or metal pins into a surface to create a feather-light pattern.

So, one may ask, how did we go from an archetypal Swiss pointillé bookbinding to these sumptuous, confectionery-inspired covers? Well, for this we truly went with our gut! Inspired by a gorgeous rainbow of macarons we indulged in one day, we began to play around with the delicious hues on our cover designs. We found that the slight shimmer of this dotted design combined perfectly with the pastel colours of these bite-sized desserts and the rest, as they say, is history!

For our Buttercream cover we tried to move as far from the original black leather binding as possible and ended up with this creamy colour. From here, it was easy to imagine the way the series should develop and we played around with other hues and “recipes.”
