Inspired by a traditional Jewish wedding canopy (chuppah) that was decorated with metallic thread on a shimmering blue background, this design calls to mind new beginnings under an enchanting night sky. The use of a marriage canopy represents the new home established by a couple through their union.

The Story Behind the Design

Feel the embrace of a magical evening with our spectacular Silk Sky design. Inspired by a traditional Jewish wedding canopy (chuppah) that was decorated with metallic thread on a shimmering blue background, this design calls to mind an enchanting starry night.

The use of a marriage canopy represents the new home established by a couple through their union. During the wedding ceremony, the chuppah is stretched and supported over four poles, or manually held up by attendants to the ceremony, with the couple standing underneath.

Held at the Jewish Museum in New York City, this beautiful example of a wedding canopy contains a Hebrew inscription dedicated to a member of the donor’s family, translating as “For my dear daughter, Veneziana…” Dating from 1867–68 and originating in Ottoman Bulgaria, this silk satin woven chuppah is typical of designs of the era with its characteristic large motif occupying the centre, balanced by smaller decorative elements, and a distinct depth of colour.

We are thrilled to reproduce this particularly exquisite example of a traditional Jewish marriage textile. With its rich beauty and delicate adornments, we hope Silk Sky inspires a feeling of limitless possibilities under the stars with the beauty of a new beginning.
