The Story Behind the Design

Inspired by an Italian book binding dating to 1620, our magenta Viola design showcases a floral pattern and rosette motif. With filigreed fronds twirling in knots, this Diamond Rosette design resembles an elaborate rose window.

The original book contained a series of illustrations in the “tondo” form, a Renaissance style of circular art. Similar in concept to a musical rondo, the term derives from the Italian “rotondo,” meaning round. Once a popular art form in ancient Greece, tondo experienced a brief revitalisation by Italian artists during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Book bindings from the 17th century are characterised by the ornamental richness of the cover’s central area. These designs were in direct contrast to the Renaissance frame style, which left the centre largely unadorned.
