Raphaël is a French brushmaker whose history goes back to 1793, and D'Artigny is its range of long-handled hog bristle brushes for oil painting.
Natural hog bristle is stiff and springy, with split tips (flags) that hold thick paint and leave expressive brushmarks. That makes it the traditional choice for oils and a good partner for heavy-bodied acrylics, whether you are laying in, scumbling or building up impasto.
D'Artigny comes in rounds (Series 358), flats (3590), long flats (359), filberts (3592) and fans (3695). The flats, long flats and filberts run all the way to size 30, so you have large heads for big canvases as well as small sizes for refining. Clean thoroughly with solvent and then soap and water, reshape the head and leave to dry.
