Raphaël Squirrel Round Brush, Series 8383 – Size 5

Raphaël is a French brushmaker whose history goes back to 1793, and its squirrel-hair brushes are made for loose, fluid watercolour.

Squirrel hair is extremely soft and holds a large reservoir of water and pigment, releasing it gently onto the paper. That makes these brushes ideal for flat and graded washes, skies, wet-in-wet effects and glazing over dry layers without lifting the colour underneath.

The range includes the Series 803 mop, Series 8383 rounds, Series 903 skywash brushes and Series 916 flats, with flats and skywash brushes sized by width in inches. A large squirrel mop can carry enough colour to cover a whole sky in a few strokes, while the rounds still come to a usable point. Rinse thoroughly after painting and let the hair dry naturally into shape.
