Raphaël Valandray Synthetic Angled Brush, Series 16331 – Size 8
Raphaël is a French brushmaker whose history goes back to 1793, and the Valandray brushes are a collection of watercolour shapes for washes, soft edges and expressive strokes.
Several of the series use Kazan squirrel, a soft, absorbent squirrel hair that holds plenty of water and colour: square-headed brushes (Series 16240), rounds (1636) and short-pointed brushes (16360). The collection is completed by a round mop (Series 760) and an angled brush in synthetic fibre (16331), which is handy for cutting in edges, foliage and architectural detail.
Use the larger heads to lay in skies and backgrounds, then switch to the pointed shapes for more defined marks such as branches, reflections and loose figures. Rinse thoroughly after painting, reshape the hair and allow to dry naturally.
