Sennelier has made artists’ colours in Paris since 1887, when Gustave Sennelier opened his shop on the Quai Voltaire, across the Seine from the Louvre. The family firm supplied painters such as Cézanne and Gauguin, and its colours are still prized for their intensity and depth. Encre de Chine à la Pagode, recognisable by the pagoda on its label, is Sennelier’s classic black drawing ink.
It gives a deep, dense black that flows smoothly from a dip pen and brush, and is water-resistant once dry, so you can lay washes of watercolour or ink over your line work without it lifting. It suits technical drawing, comics and illustration, calligraphy and ink wash painting alike.
The range runs from a 30ml bottle for the desk to economical 500ml and one-litre sizes for studios and schools. Shake before use and clean pens and brushes promptly with water.
