Sennelier has made artists’ colours in Paris since 1887, when Gustave Sennelier opened his shop on the Quai Voltaire, across the Seine from the Louvre. The family firm supplied painters such as Cézanne and Gauguin, and its colours are still prized for their intensity and depth. Its artists’ watercolour, l’Aquarelle, is made with honey added to the traditional gum arabic binder.

The honey keeps the colour moist and quick to re-wet, gives washes a remarkable luminosity, and helps the paint flow and spread smoothly across the paper. The palette of 98 colours is graded into series by pigment and includes Sennelier specialities such as Blue Sennelier, Yellow Sophie and a set of iridescent shades.

These sets cover every way of working, from pocket tins and enamelled boxes with a built-in water reservoir for painting outdoors, to themed tins of granulating, intense or neutral colours, and wooden and walnut boxes holding the full range.
